How We Raise Our Chickens Our chickens are raised on pasture in moveable "Chicken Tractor" pens that allow them to forage while keeping them safe from predators. We move the Chicken Tractors daily to allow the chickens fresh forage, insects, and clean ground. They are also provided with soy-free grain consisting of rolled peas, barley, corn, and oats. We butcher our birds on the farm ourselves, as humanely as possible, and make food safety a priority. Our whole chickens are sold frozen and packaged in shrink wrap for freshness.
What's a Freedom Ranger?? We choose to raise a hybrid broiler chicken breed called Freedom Rangers for their amazing foraging ability, more natural chicken behaviors, slower growth rate, and AMAZING traditional chicken flavor. Our birds have a beautiful golden fat skin that seals in moisture as your bird roasts. The meat and fat have so much more flavor than the typically raised Cornish Cross Broiler. The breasts are slightly smaller and the legs longer on our birds, so they are particularly wonderful if you have a family of dark meat lovers. We hope you'll enjoy our chicken as much as we do!
Chickens are sold whole and frozen. They typically range from 4-6 pounds. Our freezers still have some smaller chickens left from 2023, and they do keep very well and freezer burnt free if stored in a good deep freezer for well over a year. Our chickens are available locally at our farm in Souris, year round, and seasonally at the Bottineau Farmers Market. We can sell feet and organ meats upon request. We don't ship our meat, but may be able to meet or deliver in North Dakota depending on distance and if we have plans to travel already in place. Please contact us if you'd like to place an order, to make delivery or pick-up arrangements, or have any other questions.
